26 - Friday, June 21, 1991 ~ North Shore News ICBC and police joining forces against speeders HOW DO you convince someone not to do something dangerous when they seem to particularly enjoy doing it? That’s the challenge ICBC and the police are hoping to tackle as they join forces for a third annual blitz against speeding. Beginning Aug. 24, radio messages will support stepped-up police enforcement, particularly in the more rural areas of the pro- vince, in a special quest to get young men J6 to 25 years old to slow down. It won’t be easy. Researcher Craig Hathaway conducted focus group discussions with a number of these younger motorists in order to collect their feelings on the whole aspect of speeding. What he heard was that “‘going slow’’ is boring and frustrating, that it’s exciting and involving to be in control of going fast, but it’s frightening to go “too fast.” Why do these people speed? “*Because everybody does it,’’ was a popular answer. Few seemed concerned about their own poten- tial for injury or death, except those with family responsibilities.
