Council gives go ahead
for park in Deep Cove

A NEW neighborhood park will
be created in Deep Cove as a
result of North Vancouver District
Council's unanimous decision to
adopt 2a bylaw that rezones nine
district-owned RS-4 (residential)
lots to PRO (parks, recreation,
open space).

But at the public hearing deal-
ing with the issue two weeks ago,
many residents in the area bound-
ed by Kinloch Lane and Caledonia
Avenue between Mount Seymour
Parkway and Strathcona Road
urged council to include the
southernmost of the three lots on
Caledonia (Lot 5) in the park
allocation,

Residents had hoped to include
the lot in the park because of its

. open terrain and the easy access it

provides to the rest of the area as
opposed to the two adjacent lots
which are steeply contoured.

Unsafe trees will be removed
from the park and access will be
improved by the district in order
to link the park to Deep Cove’s
system of trails and green spaces,
but it is anticipated that much of
the land’s present wild character
will remain.

Ald. Ernie Crist pointed out
that the original proposal called
for all 10 lots to be developed.

“This is a compromise which I
am sure the people in that area
will be very happy with. They now
have a nice neighborhood park,
we lost some money,"’ said Crist.
“10 of 20 years down the road
nobody will ask about the money,
but many people will make a
comment about this beautiful
neighborhood park.’’

Ald. Jim Cuthbert expressed
hope that counci! would ‘‘return
to this issue in the near future to
look at the obvious concern that
many of the residents have of our
adding the one small piece of ad-
jacent land to make this park even
better than it is.”’

Ald. Janice Harris also
“hoped’’ that council ‘‘might’’
move to include Lot 5 in the park
in the future and spoke of an
“tunderstanding’’ that the district
would not develop Lot 5 ‘‘in the
near future.**

Ald. Rick Buchols saw a dif-
ferent future for Lot 5.

He spoke of the wider mandate
of fiscal responsibility to all
district residents and said, ‘‘I have
no trouble with giving people 90
per cent of what they are asking
for and leaving one lonely lot,
