The cynically inclined see Blue
Sky Mining as a quick and easy
pop cash-in on the enviro-neurosis
gripping the thoughts of liberal-
minded dilettantes everywhere.
Eight years ago, the band broke
through by slamming militarism on
10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. Three years
ago, Diesel And Dust was the Oil's
bit to draw attention to the plight
of Australia’s aboriginal people.
Now Peter Garrett and friends ring
warning bells to alert us to the
compromised state of the
biosphere. Easy targets all. ;

titude and has brought the Australian rockers the North American fol-
lowing they've long deserved.

potential for a project of this
nature to devolve into shrill
pedagugics is very real. But the
Aussies handily sidestep the pitfall
with a controlled power and
compressed eloquence.

The transcendent One Country
sums things up neatly with a blunt
litany of unities, ‘...One firma-
ment/One element/One mo-
ment/One fusion/Yes, and one
time.”

The Christians — Colour, Island
Records 1990

The Liverpool trio charted the
largest-selling debut release for
Island Records with their tirst effort
three years ago. Well worth the
Song wait, the polished follow up
is focused with a soulfully smooth
finesse.

Lead singer Garry Christian's
warm voice provides a heavenly
vehicle for the band’s pasitive
perspective and cautionary poli-
tics. The bottom end is nailed
down by sharp session players in-
cluding Pino Palladino on bass and
Manu Katche en drums. The Lon-
don Community Gospel Choir fills
out the rich Persuasions-inspired
harmonies of Garry and Russell
Christian.

Omar And The Howlers —
Monkey Land, Antone’s Records

You don’t have to be a biker
dude to dig this howler monkey’s
wicked roadhouse concoction.
Omar Dykes slides along,
Mississippi mud-like, somewhere
between John Fogerty and
Howlin’ Wolf. The tunes, produc-
ed and written by Mr. Omar
himself, are, for the better pan,
beer-belly busting rhythm and
olues romps. That's not to say the
guy can‘t step back from the fire
for a soft-hearted moment or two,
Night Shadows is a respectable
ballad. There’s also a growling
cover of the Beatles’ She’s A
Woman.

But Omar and fellow rhythm
pals do what they do best when
chugging along at a full-tilt boogie.
Monkey Land drips with the swea-
ty stuff.
