MAaAILBox Fiyby was in ‘pest tradition’ of air force Dear Editor: I feel compelled to reply to your Inquiring Reporter of the June 7 North Shore News, Living in the West End of Van- couver, I missed the recent brief CF-18 flyby in North Vancouver. I was disappointed at having missed this display, but even more so, { was dismayed at the public over- reaction to the young fighter pilot proudly showing his airplane to mom, I saw the CF-18 ‘‘up close’’ at Abbotsford and appreciated the skill and courage of the young men who pilot these beautiful machines. I also marvelled at the CF-18’s sleek design and _ rivet- concealing finish. 1! therefore found it incredible to observe an eye witness say on television, ‘‘It was so low | cc:uld see the rivets.” On all locai channels, the angry face of Mr. Frank O'Neil, the manager of Vancouver Interna- tional Airpert, seemed ever present as he repeatedly threatened to destroy the career of the young pilot and raged over what he perceived to be an intrusion into Kis territory. I know the TV cameras can be “heady stuff’? anc it is tough fly- ing that desk, Frank, but lighten up, okay? In Eurspe the roar of low flying jet fighters is recognized as the “Sound of Freedom,”’ while Ca- nadians far removed from past battlegrounds become indifferent and rail at Captain Parentes’ brief expression of elan. To me his flyby was in the best tradition of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Hang in there, Joe, and don’t tet them grind you down. *Jet’ Johnson Vancouver Let our pilots show off once in a while Dear Editor: We recently had an unscheduled air show over our sacred shores involving a CF-18, causing many people to become ‘‘terrified,’’ rat- tling a few windows, and sup- posedly bringing on huge amounts of whining and complains. To the contrary, all I have heard are comments like, ‘‘I wish he'd done some rolls,"’ and ‘tHe was going too slow,”’ or “Why didn’t he stay longer?’’ It’s a good thing we have numbers that people can call when they’re terrified and enraged, a kind of whiners’ phone line. What we need is a number you can call when you’re happy with some- thing. Now, I realize that deviating from your flight plan is a serious tule to break. However, eack of .these amazing machines comes with its own radar, and the guy behind the wheel also has a rela- tively good idea what he’s doing. So if you and I are paying all this money for something we rarely (if ever) see, then lighten up and let these guys show off once in a while. We bought them, we’re stuck with them, and as far as I’m concerned they can fly over and disr apt my lunchtime any day they like.
