ae RULING ON CCLLINS CASE B.C. Press Council members ‘should be removed from their positions’ Dear Editor: Hypocritical, unprofessional, dishonest, cowardly, illogical are words which spring to mind when one reads the B.C. Press Council’s pathetic attempt to excuse the in- excusable. I refer to the council’s dismissal of Doug Collins’ complaints of ‘bad reporting’ which he laid against Nicole Parton and, ‘a denial of his right to reply’ which he laid against the Vancouver Sun. In the North Shore News, July 9, under the heading B.C. Press Canada suffers from apathy Dear Editor: Doug Collins is right. Canada as we have known it is doomed. ‘When I decided to leave Britain in 1954 and chose Canada I could never have known what imbecilic and traitcrous governments — with opposition help — would eventually decide to do to that country, At least for my descendants I now realize I made a poor choice. Surely Trudeau, Mulroney, Turner and Broadbent and their legions of so-called ‘politicians’ uniquely qualify for the Guinness Book of Records? For certainly no other country in history has seen governments so surely hellbent on reducing their country to utter nuination, In time of war such behavior would be seen as treason and perpetrators shot. Even today, without war, that remedy is fully deserved. For those who can get out — and are awake — now is the time to go. The ship is sinking fst. Truly, Parliament Hill needs its own Guy Fawkes. But a successful one this time. But perhaps Canada’s greatest danger comes from ttc nlague that afflicts most of its population. It is called Canadapathy. Albert B. Griffin North Vancouver i? Council, not up in arms demand- ing that this denial of freedem of expression be eliminated instead of using it as an excuse to deny simple justice? if members of the council are so lacking in understanding of elementary civilized conduct as to believe that people in Canada can be attacked and denied the right to defend themselves, they demon- Strate their unfitness as leaders in our society. They should resign, or, failing that, they should be removed from their positions of influence and be replaced by people who are more aware of Canadian standards of fair play and common decency. Kenneth Foster North Vanccuver Council dismisses News colum- nist’s complaint, the council is reported as follows: ‘‘Council regretfully dismisses this part of the complaint (referring to the ‘right of reply') on the technical grounds that newspapers are not obliged to grant automatic right of response.’’ How interesting. How revealing. How convenient. How disgusting. So, according to the B.C. Press Council, the Nicole Partons and Vancouver Suns of the world can attack anyone or anything at any time for any or no reason and, in Canada, they have no obligation to give the victims of their abuse the ‘right of reply.’ If this is true, why is that para- gon of virtue, the B.C.
