7ST SEY. en peng omieet: 7 - Wednesday, May 10, 1989 - North Shore News UNSEEN EMISSIONS THE TRUE CULPRIT WV has more serious pollution problems than smoke Dear Editor: Why are a few people so con- cerned about the bi-annual burning of garden material when there are far worse air pollution conditions facing them constantly? Why are these people so un- comprehending of the serious ef- fects of unseen emission from vehicular traffic, shipping, air- craft, natural gas and oil furnaces, etc? Let’s face it — the kind of in- Burning ‘has to be banned’ Dear Editor: I was astounded to read the let- ter in the Sunday, April 2 issue of the North Shore News entitled “Solution to West Van’s burning issue proposed.”* That proposal suggested a new burning law to legalize burning from Oct. 1 to April 30 and no burning on Sunday, instead of the present law on a few weekends of sidious air fumes generated by gasoline, diesel, kerosene, oil, etc., are indeed many times worse than those generated by the occasional backyard fires. One has to suppose that seeing some smoke makes all the dif- ference to some minds. Why ig- nore all the fume generating trips of 40,000 plus cars operated by commuters and residents of the municipality? Here, many of the the year. The reasons given were trivial and petty. The Sunday ban- ning was almost humorous. The writers must certainly be living in some time warp. In this day and age of the Greenhouse effect, and our planet in dire peril I do not think there can even be an argument for or against burning. It has to be bann- ed. older cars, and even new ones have inoperative or deactivated poliu- tion controls. What about the in- numerable diesel trucks, trailer- trucks, campers and buses using the Upper Levels Highway — all are substantial contributors to lowering the air quality. The periodic references to the “health hazard’’ caused by backyard burning is poppycock and misplaced ‘‘scapegoating." Does the wealthiest community in Canada also want the reputation of being the most unenlightened? Let us have pride in our com- munity. Let us abandon question- able, wary polls (1987/88 poll showed that 75% of West Van res- idents fa rored burning???) and put this burt ing issue to the vote. Beverley Holman West V: incouver Better burn than stockpile Dear Editor: As a 32-year West Vancouver resident who has seen his burning privileges gradually whittled down, L read Katharine Steig’s open letter and the rebuttal from Derrick Hawkins et al with interest. Mr. Hawkins expressed my feel- ings exactly, but | would add that many of us ‘‘pro burners’’, being aeniors, are able to dispose of garden rubbish in small quantities any time during the winter months when the weather is suitable, and the material itself dry. Surely this is better than having to store rubbish for weeks or mon- ths, and frequently finding the des- ignated burning days or the rub- — 50 plus 1 TRAVEL with SHIRLEY’’ to AUSTRALIA. & FINI-OCTOBER/E9 | Visit: THE BARRIER REEF; THE OUTBACK; take the GHAN : TRAIN from ALICE SPRINGS to ADELAIDE; MELBOURNE and beautiful SYDNEY; relax in FiJi.
