The purpose of the Aquarium whale display is not for entertain- ment, or designed for ‘laughs’ as according to Hunter. Instead, it is an educational program for alt ages. What is shown of them is no more than what can be scen in the wild ~— a display: .of their behavioral patterns so necessary for their existence. As for big fish ‘‘that jump through hoops,” that has never happened at the Aquarium, and besides, the whales are mammals not ‘fish’. Hunter writes of crippled fins — the dropping dorsal! fin of a large and older male has that ap- pearance wherever it may be -— it is made of cartilage, and has a very small base as compared to its height. The Aquarium has approximate- ly 700 school children a month who participate in the educational programs. Most arrive knowl. edgcable, ready with questions to be answered. They are very keen and some return for the various laboratory sessions held on weekends. From these children will come our future biologists and scientists. Alb are healthy, spirited, and safe in their home. As much care has gone into bringing people to the whales, as has gone into caring for them.
