SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY North Van math NORTH VANCOUVER resident Mark Kayll was honored at the Simon Fraser University convoca- tion this year. Kayll received his B.Sc. degree in honors mathematics as well as the dean’s medal in science. The Simon Fraser scholar thinks that life couldn’t be much better at this point. Successfully courted by Rutgers University for graduate Study this fall and the winner of a 1967 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council scholarship worth $17,500 a year for up to four years, Kayll can barely believe his good fortune. “The opportunity is just fan- tastic for me,"’ he said. ‘‘Here | am young, finished my B.Sc., presented with a great opportunity to get my PhD and | will be fully supported (financially) throughout my studies.” LONGTIME NORTH Vancouver resident Wendy Miller has won a Robert L. Stanfield book prize in political science from Simon Fraser University. SFU GRADUATE Wendy Miller...won Robert L. Stanfield book prize in political science. Miller, 28, is part of the univer- sity’s class of 87, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree with a major in political science and a minor in women’s studies. Cur- rently working in London, England, she was unable to attend the university’s June 4 to 5 con- vocation ceremonies. A graduate of Argyle Secondary School, Miller attended Capilano College before transferring to SFU. She has just been accepted to begin a graduate degree in political science at the University of Lon- don this fall. Kayll expects to pursue his doc- toral studies in combinatorics and graph theory at Rutgers, an im- mense institution in New Jersey with 25,000 undergraduates and thousands of graduate students spread over three cities. ‘‘I chose Rutgers because it was best for me; the department there is very strong in my areas of interest. They also flew me out, showed me the area and offered me free tuition, a fellowship and a _ teaching assistantship.”” Kayll credits his participation in SFU's cooperative education pro- gram as being essential in helping him sort out career options. Through co-op practicums, he has worked for an actuarial firm, a National Research Council lab in Ottawa, TRIUMF, an SFU math professor and, this summer, for INETCO Systems in Burnaby on software development. “The co-op program has given me a lot of work experience and helped me decide what I’m really interested in,’’ explains Kayll. “I’ve enjoyed all of the jobs, but the opportunity to work in pure math research last summer with Prof. Brian Alspach really stands out. At the moment | want to pur- sue research and eventually teach and do research at the university level, hopefully in B.C.”’ Kayll came to SFI from Argyle Secondary in North Vancouver partly because he wanted to attend an institution that wasn't too big to provide a personal approach to its students. Helping confirm his decision was a prestigious Gordon Shrum entrance scholarship, which SFU gave him to cover most of his undergraduate expenses. Besides it wouldn’t have given me enough time for my studies if I had played for the uni- versity."’ As it is, Kayll continues to play basketball in SFU’s intramural leagues and for a community league in North Vancouver, He has also coached youngsters. at the Grade 6 and 7 level. ‘I enjoy the game and it keeps me in shape,”’ says Kayll, who claims that his ex- pertise in math has never made it any easier for him to calculate the angles necessary to sink a free throw.
