Doug Collins ® get this straight @ THAT MOST of our churches have gone dotty and now concern themselves with everything but religion is no secret. They are against real justice for criminals, for in- stance, believing that a kind word to a killer can cure. They are experts on defence, and know that the West can go nak- ed into the communist conference chamber. They are pro-pansy and believe that God the Father is dead and now wears skirts. They may never have been to South Africa, but have faith that they could ‘settle | that country’s racial woes in a jif- fy. In short, they are the NDP at | prayer, only more so. Their greatest idiocy of all, though, is seen on the immigra- tion front. Witite Anglo-Saxon } Protestant though many of them in these parts may be, they yearn for more Sikhs, more Asiatics, more blacks and more browns. Every Sunday, and probably several times during the week, they ask the Lord to speed the flood. St. David’s United Church in West Vancouver and Hew Gwynne of its refugee committee are no exceptions to that rule. On- ly a few days ago we read in this f newspaper that St. David’s, aided f and abetted by the West Van- couver United Church, are mov- ing heaven and earth, as it were, to. bring in another bunch of ‘refugees’: from South East Asia. St: David’s has already done sterling work in the refugee field, having sponsored 16 people in the recent past. This time it wants to bring in another seven, all related to a 24-year-old Laotian whom f the church sponsored in 1983. THE FOLLOWING is a list of re- cent crimes on the North Shore. There are four brothers, a sister, a sister-in-law, and a two- year-old niece, all in Thailand. The parents and other members of the brood are still in Laos, but we may be sure that our man Hew will be working on their behalf too, he being big on ‘‘family reunification’’, (It does not seem to occur to him that if family reunification is that important, the one who is here could go back and join the many that are there. But we’ll let that pass.) Alas, there are obstacles. A UN commission says that others in Thailand have priority in getting to the Great Canadian Bonanza. But we need not concern ourselves with that, except to note that in order to help his particular pet, Mr. Gwynne is seeking the assistance of Gerry Weiner, the minister of state for immigration. Weiner is the right man to see. A few weeks ago he overruled im- wigration department officials and the vetoes of three previous immigration ministers to allow a crook with 20 criminal convic- tions to remain in Canada. On thar occasion it was Jewish organizations in Montreal that wanted a favor done. You may say that a few more Laotian refugees make no dif- ference, that we are being swamped anyway and might as WEST VANCOUVER * Break and enter to residence - 1000 Block Aubeneau. We should not give up without 4 struggle. What is a refugee? In a previous paragraph | put the word in| quotation marks because under our rules here in Wimpland, a refugee is anyone who says he’s a refugee, provided he comes from some place where the cops are tough. But most ‘refugees’ are not refugees at all. They are not threatened with damage to life or limb. As @ government report made clear last year, no more than 10 per cent are real refugees. They | simply don’t want to live in their native countries. But the Gwynnes hear voices, and the voices say that moving the population of | South East Asia te Canada is God’s Work. And not only the population of South East Asia. Come the four corners of the earth, and we must not shock them by telling them to beat it. Gwynne can’t understand why his Laotian lot cannot get in right away. ‘Why would anyone turn down two financially-sound chur- ches as sponsors?’’ he asked. If the reasons implicit in the above are not enough, I can give } him others: churches have been known to renege on their com- mitments. And Weiner has been known to tell them not to worry about such things. The taxpayer will pick up the tab. i If St. David's is concerned with suffering humanity, why not do more on the North Shore?
