45 - Sunday, January 11, 1987 - North Shore News IT’S NO secret that a traveller can buy expensive jewelry and watches at bargain prices in many parts of the world. For example, [| am never rd without my Seiko watch, purchas- ed in Jersey three years ago for the paltry sum of £53. At that time the pound was taking a real beating if and | estimate thai my fine watch cost me about $90 Canadian. It hasn’t lost a minute or re- quired a new battery in that time. Now, there are people with a lot more money than I have who i aren't satisfied with a modest watch. They are entranced by the i * multi-diamond ones. These are i undeniably a bargain as well, but oniy if you are in the tax bracket that can handle that kind of thing. The big crunch comes when you have to bring the bargain through Canada Customs. There ate few people who look more sheepish than the well-off businessman be- ing questioned about some piece of - jewelry -he’s. attempting to bluff through. I’d. guess that next to illicit a drugs, jewelry is the biggest cash Careers in Travel fA 6 We can open the door to the exciting world of travel for YOU DAY AND EVENING COURSES 4 conducted by industry profussionals e tn 4 TRAVEL COUNSELLING SALES & MARKETING ff # RESERVEC COMPUTERS ; with on-site installations ie TRAVEL TRAINING CENTRE Ste. 2-1583 Pemberton Ave. fa North Vancouver 986-2221 Enjoy two nights of luxurious accommodation at the Oak Bay Beach | Hotel. On one visit to Canada Customs at Vancouver Airport (as a guest, not a suspect) | had the opportunity of viewing a bagful of gold and assorted gems with an estimated value of over $300,000. The sad thing about it was that travel wise the majority of the stuff was in such gaudy taste that I'd be ashamed to be seen wearing. it. + This stuff was probably the result of deliberate smuggling on a ry seizure large scale. Not that the businessman with the $15,000 watch strapped to his wrist is any less a smuggler, but there is a slight difference — that businessman could be you. Canada Customs is aware that there is some uncertainty among travellers about the rules regarding transporting jewelry across our border. For example: Did you know that should a young Canadian girl become engaged to a young man outside of Canada and receive a ting purchased outside of Canada that the ring must be declared at the border and the duty paid? Just because an item of jewelry is a gift makes no difference. The next common misunder- standing comes when a traveller (and an idiot, at that) goes abroad with a large quantity of expensive personal jewelry. As a departing Canadian no one will question your jewelry.
