Last year, the information sec-
tion of the North Shore Informa-
tion and Volunteer Centre
(NSIVC) answered over 5,000 re-
quests for information in matters
such as these.

Dawn Montgomery, information
coordinator at NSIVC says that
“often, the caller hus a very
specific question, but by talking
further with them, both of us
discover that there are several op-
tions available."

Such was the case with a caller
who asked about extended care
services for an elderly relative.
Through talking with her, Mon-
tgomery was able to define = the
need which could be met by a
home-care nursing service rather
than placement in an institution.

Trends in the nature of informa-
tion calls fluctuate, depending on
the time of year and other factors.
These range from questions about
accommodation and local attrac-
tions to queries about bus fares
and schedules.

But the highest percentage of
calls are those relating to legal
matters. Many of these calls are
crisis situations and can be
