Morgan, a mother of one, was stung for $8.51 when she bought a fingerprinting kit from a Keepsafe Finger- printing Systems door to door saJesman. She ‘hoped the kit could help protect her 16 month- old daughter Deirdre, or at least aid in her child’s return if abducted. After buying the kit, con- sisting of three sheets of paper and two cellophane ink pads, Morgan found she couldn't take proper prints of her toddler’s fingers, the company wasn’t endorsed’ by the’ police and the company's phone number was discon- nected. ‘Everything seemed legitimate until I went to the police,’’ said Morgan. Concerned about the qual- ity of the prints she had made, Morgan took the smudged blotches to the North Vancouver RCMP of- fice because the kit’s litera- ture inferred police support of the program. | rece ae By ROSS MEEK North Vancouver RCMP | officer Don Jette told her, ‘not only were the finger- prints useless, but. unneces- sary. Back in March, Morgan was approached by two young men, who she thought were summery _ students, selling the Keepsafe finger- print kit. In a rush, Morgan bought the kit without too much consideration. Later she skipped a RCMP spon- sored Operation Identifica- tion night, depending on the finger print kit. Now she warns other mothers: ‘‘Don’t be too over exuberant about protecting your child. West Van- couver police report similar statistics. And in the case of an ab-. ducted child the best iden- tification is a photograph, said Jette. Morgan now realizes she has’ more helpful informa- tion in her baby book than with any fingerprint. Despite feeling that Keep- safe is capitalizing on a mother’s natural emotion to protect her child, Morgan feels the kit could be of some use to parents with older children.
