AT - Sunday, May 13, 1984 - North Shore News 8 mailbox [>><| Sex responsibility of men Dear Editor: I am directing this letter to P. Neilson Kolding of the Men’s Action Committee, Vancouver, in response to his tragic display of ignorance. Oh you poor misguided man, blinded still by the Ed- wardian double standard of the late nineteenth century. | read with anger and thensym- pathy your thesis, namely, that men are nor responsible for birth control. Your argu- ment makes the following assumptions: that men universally take a passive role in sexual intercourse, that women are always the ag- gressors, and that men are North Van SPCA just fine Dear Editor: 1 personally visited the SPCA in North Vancouver Shelter on May 3 and could not find anything that con- stituted lack of care for the animals housed in the facili- y. The dog runs were clean and dry. These concrete runs are heated and dry very quickly when hosed down during the cleaning process. merely pawns in the women’s sexual encounters. Based on these ridiculous assumptions you deduce that men are not responsible at all for the con- sequences (pregnancy) of sex- ual intercourse. Surely you must see the complete lack of logic in your stance. You represent a Men’s ACTION Committee, but by representing man as a PASSIVE not active partici- pant in human sexuality. Further, contrary to your intentions, your views ultimately serve to DEGRADE the very gender you wish to promote; any educated man would be sore- ly offended by your com- The cat cages are steel with solid bases and droppings cannot fall thru on other animals. It is true that the lit- ter is not supplied as the cages are too small but the cats do have shredded paper for toilet use. It is difficult to compare the North Van shelter with West Van as they do not have the funds. {| can only suggest Questions about private school Dear Editor: There are some questions we should like to address to John Humphries and the parents of the prospective students of the proposed North Shore Independent School. Keeping in mind that the school would be represen tative of the community and would be sensitive to our needs What would be the propos- ed entrance requirements? Would entrance be open for all children of the com munity presently served by the public school system, eg., those with learning and physical disabilities, ESL students, etc.? What provisions would be made for lower income famihes who could not af- ford tulon? Would children with discipline problems be given required attention, of would they be required to transter to the public schools? A response to these ques tions would be appreciated Bruce Jackson Susan Anderson West Vancouver Why is there no ments for they reduce mens’ integrity as sexual beings and as partners in the reproduc- tive cycle. I strongly believe that men, in general, would be offend- ed by your letter, because it is a direct assault on the sexual tesponsibility of men; a man is equally as responsible as a woman if a pregnancy occurs via their relationship. If you wish to label yourself as sex- ually illiterate, so be it. But please, do not attempt to drag the whole gender down with you. Charlotte E. Harvey Student, Faculty of Education, that the general public take a greater responsibility in car- ing for their pets, such as neutering, Spaying, proper food and shelter, the same kind of care you would want your child to have and these animals will not wind up in the SPCA shelter. 1 could not corroborateMs. Gilmore’s sibmission to the N.S.N.
