Al4 - Wednesday, April 20, 1983 - North Shore News GEE election ’83 Don’t mortgage the future, warns Ree “B.C. WAS THE LAST province in Canada into the recession and we can be the first out of it,” says in- cumbent North Vancouver- Capilano MLA Angus Ree, running for re-election on the Socred ticket in the May 5 election. “In order to effectively participate in the recovery we must elect a government that will minimize public spending but, at the same time, encourage investment and confidence in the private sector,” Ree con- tinues. “This will only be ac- complished by returning Social Credit. The alter- natiye is larger government borrowing with increased ¢axes in the future. Let's build for the future, not mortgage it,” he declares. Ree, 53, graduated from UBC as a lawyer but served six years in the armed forced before taking up his profession. His career background includes stints in insurance, with a pipeline company and as _ legal counsel to the Vancouver Stock Exchange before returning to private practice as a partner in his own law firm. He was first elected to the Legislature in 1979, winning pearly 56 per cent of the vote in North Van-Capilano where he defeated his NDP opponent by a majority of 6,108. Parties call for sign-wrecking truce REMOVAL or defacement of election signs belonging to other political parties is not being condoned, the Campaign manager for North Vancouver-Seymour NDP candidate David Schreck said Sunday. Bill Bell made the com- ment after some signs for Social Credit MLA Jack Davis were defaced Saturday night. Several Schreck signs were removed from their locations on the weekend as well, Bell said. “The vandalism might have been the work of a few irresponsible people or even the odd over zealous campaign worker for either party,” he said. “It doesn't matter - we do not condone it at all, and I'm told that Jobs lost to North Van, charges Kempo “THIS GOVERNMENT has exported jobs rather than created them,” charges Olga Kempo, North Vancouver- Capilano NDP candidate in the May 5 election. “The ships for the Nor- theast coal project should have been built in North Vancouver,” she told a recent campaign meeting. “Instead, they are being built in Belgium and Korea, partially subsidized by the Canadian taxpayers.” If the ships had been built on the North Shore, she told her audience, $160 million would have been injected into the local economy. “This would have been a real boost to small business and industry with all the spin-off effects.” The 26 per cent unem- ployment rate of British Columbians aged 15-24 wasa “tragic waste of our productive young people who desperately want work,” she declared. An NDP government, she promised, would emphasize cooperation between government and = small business to expand em- pleyment. Kempo, a _ bilingual feminist who says her age is irrelevant, is a UBC graduate who has taught French and Quebec studies at Capilano College for the past nine years. She is active in the Women's Network and was formerly Vancouver head of the Committee for an In- dependent Canada. This is her first bid for a seat in the Legislature.
