million

MONTREAL - A 57-year-
old mother who picked the
winning numbers from a hat,
colleeted $3.9 milhon tax
free. Monday, the largest
‘single lottery windfall ever in
North America.

Jacqueline Landry,  ac-
companied by her husband
Rolland, was first in line at
the opening of Loto-Quebec
offices to claim the wealth
from her lucky combination
in the 649 draw this week-
end.

The resident of the south-
shore bedroom community
of Longueuil picked the
winning six numbers out of a
possible 49 from a jackpot of
$3.895 387.50. Loto officials
said the sum was the largest
single lottery payment ever
in North America because
larger prizes in the United
States were paid in in-
stallments.

“We haven't slept a wink
since Sunday morning,”
Mrs. Landry said in a Loto-
Quebec release. “We were
up at 3:00 am (Monday)
ready to accept our win.

“You can't imagine what
happened when we
discovered we won! Joyous
cries, telephone calls to our
children, a visit to the ticket
seller to make sure we were
the only winners, planning
and precious care of the
ticket.”

Mrs. Landry said_ she
picked the winning numbers
from a hat.

Mr. Landry, the manager
of a credit union, called it “a
thrill of a lifetime.” He said
his wife “was naturally
lucky” and had won $100
with her first lottery ticket
several years ago.
