THE SHOPPING WENT WELL Just change the label The first-tume visitor to Buenos Aires will probably find himself in the famous Florida shopping area. Let me warn you about the prices! They are geared to wealthy businessmen bringing home a giftie for the little wife. No matter how badly your conscience ts bothering you. you'll find something ex- pensive enough to make you feel cleansed. The other main shopping area is Santa Fe. Here the prices are a bit better but you can still part with a bundle. If you want bargains go where they've never heard of a tounst - for example, some of the suburbs of Buenos Aires such as Lomas de Zamorra or even Monte Grande. To get there, take a cab to Constituuion Station and board the commuter train. A large nouce board in the main area announces the departure times and the platform numbers. The ride - nearly an hour - will cost you less than a dollar return. For heavens sake don't throw away your ticket stub - you must present it to the man at the gate in order to leave the station on your artival back to Constitution. What to buy? SHOES! 1 bought six pairs of mar- vellous high heeled creations for an average pnce of twelve dollars. Every part is leather including the lining. All-leather handbags, bref cases and luggage are about 3 of the price you'd pay here. Leather coats and jackets are beautifully made and very cheap. Problem is that trayel- by Barbara McCreadie they don’t have much of a selection until late fall - early Apnil. The other product that | found to be incredibly cheap is pottery. For a set in- cluding a large soup tureen, six soup bowls and a huge teapot. I paid $18. Don't bother asking me how I! managed to carry it home. Even if the propnetor speaks English, he will probably pretend that he doesn't. It's not that he’s trying to be inhospitable but most of us pratde away so quickly that it’s easier to disclaim any knowledge than to be made a fool of. The first pair of shoes that I bought was from a small shop in Lomas. No Enghsh spoken but 1 managed. Next day, I was so thnlied with my bargain that ] returned to buy more. Oddly enough, the owner had learned to speak English overnight! He even remembered my shoe size. And, he had relatives in Toronto. Unfortunately, 1 didn't know them. Watch too, for small larceny. One men’s shop had some nice shirts on sale. I bought one in extra large for Bnan but another - style appeared to be available in size large only. I burst out laughing when the clerk took the shirt out in the back, cut off the label and substituted one reading “X-G."” He was offended when I refused to buy it. Otherwise went well. One thing that I noticed - everything carried in the shop ts displayed in the windows. No point in going inside tf the article you want isn't out front. The shops are uniformly understocked and my shopping overstaffed. Just poke your nose inside and you'll be surrounded by six chattenng clerks. Another thing to watch 1s your interpretauon of the pnces. When the zeros reach six or eight, it’s easy to lose one. A dress that I thought was $30 turned out to be a designer orginal for $300. No wonder J liked it. It's still in the shop window, too. Must tell you about my experience with Canada Customs on my return. I'd carefully made out my declaration, going for my maximum $150. I'd over- spent by $17. And, I had one bottle of wine too many. The officer looked at my declaration and _ began crossing out and changing things. “Did I make a mistake?” I enquired. “About $17 worth.” he rephed, eliminating the amount that I'd have to pay duty on. “What about bottle of wine?” “Sbhhhbhhh. You declared it. Have a nice day! Every time I pass through Canada Customs, I'm more and more impressed with the kindness and courtesy of those cificers. the extra Preparing for a trip?
