wd” ~ C10-Wednesday, October 29, 1980 - North Shore News THE PHILADELPHIA STORY: I I arrived in Philadelphia STARVING. We left Vancouver on United Airlines at 7:45- in the morning. The breakfast looked delicious (probably packed in the CPA kitchens) but it was too close to the middle of the night to in- terest me. Then, we had a wait in Chicago with food - services yukky and a fair hike from our gate. I passed, expecting the next flight to serve a tasty lunch. Wrong. We got a bag of bread sticks and a little pot of cheese spread. Since we were scheduled - for a cocktail party upon . arrival, I began to panic. Who dared to throw a2 couple of drinks into an empty stomach and still hope to remain lucid for the rest of the evening? Your front-line travel reporter decided that a light meal was imperative. A block from the hotel a nice looking. delicatessen beckoned. Shrimp salad? Sure — a quarter pound carton for $1.10 seemed like a sensible choice so I bought it and brown-bagged my way Promoting A ‘skimobile’ is on its way to promote the province's ski areas to audiences in the Pacific northwest states — Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana -- and as far east as Winnipeg, the tourism back to the hotel. The Philadelphia Musuem of Art is tops on my list of “must sees”. The big plus about this musuem is its layout. Never, ever, have I seen paintings, sculpture and artifacts displayed so beautifully. The building is grand but someone with superb taste has planned the rooms so that each is a delight. My other two favorite museums (British and Vatican) need to hire ‘the same person. Unfortunately, that shrimp. salad came back to haunt me. Hot flashes, goose bumps and heaving stomach told me that I'd done something stupid. The plumbing in the Art Museum is excellent. We carried on to the University of Pennsylvania to see their fabulous exhibit of Egyptian Mummies (there until next year). It’s also a great place to visit but much better when your stomach is settled. We drove past the Betsy Ross House the next day. In the courtyard was a fountain ‘The Greatest Show on The ‘skimobile’ will travel over 6,200 kilometres, with representatives from B.C.'s tourist regions and ski areas distributing information at travel agencies and ski | Shops along its route. Also, I was told, cats live there, What better reason to visit the place where Betsy stitched the first “Stars and Stripes”? Sure enough! a cat greeted me at the gate. Using my best cat language, I offered to rub his ears. He accepted. Two seconds later, he whacked me with a paw — all claws — and carried on to the next sucker. So much for Betsy’s cats! Later I learned that there was no reason for the brass fountain or the resident cats. Some sculptor thought cats were. ap- propriate and so a legend began. For all I know, Betsy was a dog lover.
