(Eliswerth Dickson photo) From mayor to minister? North Snore News, founded in 19609 as an independent community newspaper and qualified undey Schedule 111, Port 111. Poragraph 111° of the Excise Tax Act.isa published w FROM PAGE 1 At the moment, he says, he stands ‘“‘to be turfed out’’ every two years in municipal elections. He describes him- self as a professional politi- cian and says that as such, being in the legislature and says that as such, being in the Legislature—especially as a minister—would be in his own best ifterests. And though he stresses he has never followed a party line, he sees only one choice if he were to stand for nomination into provincial politics—with the Social Crdit Party. Bell says he was ap- proached by Social Creditors and asked to mect other candidates for the party's nomination for Capilano. ‘NO DOGFIGHTS’ The mecting, he says, was at a social function, explain- ing he would not be interested in entering a ‘dogfight’ nomination. He admits the idea of becoming an MLA—and even more so a_ cabinet minister—appcals to him. Even so, he's been going over the question afl weck and has told the News he will not be committing himself to a decision before tomorrow (Monday). Mayor Bell feels tt would be logical for him to stand for the Social Credit nomination only—in spite of his stated lack of party alliliation. He sees no purpose as standing down as mayor if the odds of being cliected to Victoria are not in bis favor. This, he says, rules out the possibilities of standing as independent, Conservative or Liberal as impractical. But he sees the prospect of standing for the Socreds as a personal political opportunity he is tempted to grasp. He says he favors the Socred ideal of free enter- prise and admires Bill _ Bennett both as a politician and a man. He can see himself working well with Bennett, particularly as a cabinet minister. However, Bell does not pretend to be an instant Socred. REJECTS PARTY VOTING He says he has always ‘voted for the man’’, not the party and thinks that where- as in many cases he would be happy backing Socred poli- cies, if they didn't tally with his own ideals then he would not toe the party line. It is Bell who has turned over his office on Fridays to Bennett, North Vancouver's proxy MLA since’ both ridings became unrepresent- ed, in Victoria for the premier to meet with his ““constitucnts”’ it was while Bennett was there on one of his Friday visits that Bell mentioned the idea and says the premier welcomed him with open arms.
