Thase books that keep you up too late ar night because you just have to read one more chapter and others that you want to read slowly and savour cach passage. Here is a selection of titles which I feel steod out from the rest and deserve another turn in the spotlight. From serious to hilarious, fiction can provide it all and these books give the perfect blend. EICHION : 1, Heartbreaker by Robert Ferrigno, (Pantheon Books), comes at you bristling . with energy in the first chapter and doesn’t let - up. When undercover cop, Val Duran goes on- the run from a Miami drug lord, you know his past is going to collide with his present.- ‘errigno weaves his tale with style and terrific pacing. ; - 2. The Fires by Rene Steinke, (William Morrow and Company), is a debut novel with tremendous promise. Steinke’s writing is spelibinding, as she takes vs on Ella’s journcy of self-discovery, her way illuminated by the fires she sets. She struggles to reveal the secrets of her childhood which have left their scars inside as truly as the burns she wears on her skin. . 3. One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night by Christopher Brookmyre, (Little, Brown and Company), is a wild joyride that bounces along striking targets at will. An oil rig con- verted to holiday camp, mercenaries on & botched kidnap raid, and a load of former classmates are al! shaken not stirred. (Little, Brown and Company), is a change of pace from Mosley’s mystery books. A look into the life of Socrates Fortlow who has spent most of his adult life in prison and is strug- gling to find his way outside. His awareness of the circumstances that have controlled him grows as he gains insight into the self-image of the modern black man. ; 5. The Road to Mars by Eric Idle, (Pantheon Books), traces the search for the comedy gene by Carlton, android from the Twenty-second century. His travels with comedians, Muscroft and Ashby, slip from onc hilarious misadven- ture to the next. Set against the backdrop of a futuristic terrorist attack in the far reaches of the solar system, Eric Idle yanks on the joy stick and entertains right through to the last page. These non-fiction titles all are capable of transporting you to a different reality and enhancing your own with the increased under- sianding they offer. NON-FICTION ; 1, The Endurance by Caroline Alexander, (Alfred Knopf), is the remarkable tale from 1914 of a group of Antarctic explorers whase ship, Endurance, gets stuck in the southern ice. Their ordeal is one of the greatest survival stories ever told. Alexander has donc an admirable job of research in this book. The Last Man on the Moon by Eugene Cernan, (St Martin’s Press), is a first person view of the space program from its beginning to the final manned mission to the Moon. Ina well written book, Cernan gives a very person- al look at what it was to be an astronaut and be part of the space race. His descriptions of the lunar missions will put you firmly on the quict gray surface of the moon. 3. Full Moon by Michael Light, (Alfred Knopf), is.a photography book like no other. From over 30,000 images at NASA’s archives, Michael Light selected the 129 colour and black and white photos that inake up this book. Incredible detail comes through in the brilliant reproductions, leaving you awestruck by the closeness of the monn’s surface. 4. Pool Light by Howard Schatz, (Graphis), is an underwater exploratioa of the human form set free of the confines of gravity. The models are weightless, free of earthly con- straints as they move in this liquid studio.
