Fireworks unnecessary assault

Dear Editor:

I have written both West Van
and Vancouver city councils
recently suggesting the summer
fireworks displays be relocated
and de-centralized like the Sea
Festival has successfully been this
year.

Every year they jam this and
other events into the West End
and the noise, car exhaust, litter,
. broken glass, etc.,is an assault on

<-Even with traffic restrictions,
the number of cars still increases

your newspaper on July 1.

could easily be limited to one
night only) and to have the
displays moved to a safer, more
central location like off Jerico or
off Dundarave would allow a
greater number of people to view
them, especially residents from
Caulfeild through to Lynn Valiey
and upper Lonsdale.

The music portion could be
synchronized on radio as I believe
has already been done, and most
viewers hear the accompanying
music over car or other radios
anyway.

1 am hoping somie readers will
write in opposing my suggestions
because I theorize that the majori-
ty of the people who flock to the
West End to watch these events
(alt of them expect a parking
space) would seriously object to

location farther out in the water
would allow more people to view
the displays.

Polar bear swims, sea festival,
fireworks, marathons, parades,
protests, peace marches and much
more now sprinkle the calendar
each year disrupting traffic,
business and life in general and
basically assaulting the senses of
the residents.

The most densely populated
area in North America, the West
End, has become a ‘‘ghetto’’ for
these activities anc it will get
worse. And all because it is simply
conveniently downtown and cen-
tral.

Well, if he did, it must have been
said privately to Collins.

Yes, Editor, that was a repor-
ting no-no, and Collins knows
this. Instead he should copy the
Style of Noel Wright, his co-writer
who proves his point not with
hate, but with humor.

Collins’ journalism is yellow.
His readers (like those rubber-
necking at an accident hoping for
gore) expect from him articles of
bias, preconception and partiality.
And they usually get such articles
becauses Collins deservedly has
become mired. He niust write in
this way to get readers.

Finally, how on earth did Col-
lins tink Lamont and Spencer with
“false news,”’ Keegstra and the
transportation of the Jews? Such
relevancy! Was that just the Col-
lins verbosity or the rambling of
asick mind?
