Tem- Sentra garners honor THE 3.3-million-member, not- for-profit Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) recently pres- ented the CAA Used Car Perfor- mance Award for i991 to Nissan Canada Inc. Nissan earned this year’s award for its popular Sentra model, years 1987 to 1989.- This year’s CAA ‘pyramid’ award is the second consecutive earned by Nissan. Nissan was presented the award for the first time last year, also for the Sentra model. The solid bronze pyramid, symbolizing engineernig excellence and durability, has become one of the more prized achievements available to automobile manufac- turers in Canada, primarily because it recognizes owner satisfaction. The award is based on three main criteria: level of owner satisfaction; mechanical reliability and cost of repairs; and the number of owners who would choose the same car again if given the opportunity to go back in time when they bought the vehicle. The award is the result of information provided by respondents to CAA’s Vehicle Durability Survey. Over 20,000 Canadian motorists responded this year. Qualifying cars for the award must have been produced in the 1987, 1988 and 1989 model years. This year’s top 10 vehicles in- clude: . Nissan Sentra Honda Accord Toyota Camry Mercury Grand Marquis* . The car can be raised or lowered to suit the workers’ height. The Saturn project also repre- sents a major step forward in North American management- labor relations. For the first time, all decisions at the plant are reached by a consensus of Management and United Auto Workers union representatives. New employees receive five days of ‘awareness training’ to show them how to work in teams and how to reach decisions by consen- sus. Even after that, employees get up to 750 hours of additional * training. ’ General Motors’ enormous in- _vestment in Saturn will either be the most successful project ever attempted by a world automaker, or a huge, financial disaster. Saturn has to sell a lot of cars to break even, estimated at 500,000 per year.
