HE MOST telling details of an artist’s life can often be found in one or two simple entries of a biography. In the case of American photographer Elliott Erwitt, the humor and anguish revealed in these telling lines is indicative of his artistic viewpoint — that life is a complex combination of comedy and tragedy. EVELYN JACOB spotlight feature in his now famous black and white photograph of a distraught Jackie Kennedy, taken in 1963 at Arlington Cemetery, a sparkling detail of a single tear caught in the fine black mesh of the widow's veil captures the poignancy of that gloomy day. Another compelling photo, a young boy peering through a spider crack in the window of a car, the crack covering one eye, is moving, tragic, and profound (Er- witt, however, insists that his work is ‘not very profound’”’). Erwitt, 61, has also managed to capture life’s most biting ironies; many of his candid shots are full of humor. A dog clutching a human skull ticks its chops; two women with beehives dressed in spotted leopard-skin coats are caught strolling along a matching cob- blestone road. The images are as simple and as clever as a witty pun. ply Es S Nn aps . oP.
