THE HEAT is about to be turned up a bit more

on motorists who misbehave on the Sea to
highway. The Radar Camera is back.

At his March 13 news
conference, B.C. Solicitor
General Russ Fraser iden-
tified the highway from
West Van to Whistler as one
of the priority sites for the
latest test of the high-tech
speed surveillance system.
Other scenes of speed-related
accidents around the Lower
Mainland and the province
will also get visits from the

The system couples radar
with a camera. If a vehicle
exceeds the speed limit pro-
grammed into the unit, the
camera shoots the rear
licence plate and the regis-
tered owner gets a $75 ticket
in the mail, with 45 days to
pay. There are no driver
points assessed.

In earlier tests, police ex-
perimented with the unit to
determine a reasonable pro-
grammed speed, given that
traffic volumes may some-
times sweep all motorists
