film Harry delivers laughs When Harry Met Sally....*** (Columbia) Rated 14 yrs. (at the Gran- ville, Oakridge, Scott, Coquitlam, Station Square, Clearbrook and Park & Tilford cinemas) “WHY CAN'T we just be friends2”’ That, according to Harry (Billy Crystal), is a death knell. A man can't have a female friend without wanting to have sex with her. Not that he has a sncwball’s chance with Sally (Meg Ryan). During an 18-hour drive from Chicago to New York in 1977, they discover just how different two people can be. Sally has a Mary Tyler Moore perspective on things whereas Harry always reads the last page of a book first Gust in case he dies before completing it). His romantic side is equally dark, She likes to be held all night, while men, he says, start looking for the door after about a minute. “Your problem,’ he counsels, “is between 60 seconds and all night.” it's going to be a long 18 hours. Ten years and a few failed rela- tionships later, they meet again and a mere mature Harry finally apologizes. They become friends. For months they. confide in each - other, discuss their unsuccessful dates, and have late-night piliow talks over the phone. But, then it happens. Can their friendship survive sex? The story has an honest ring to it since it was fashioned partly on director Rob Reiner’s own experi- ences, including a balipask scene where Harry and his best friend are trying te have a serious discus- sion, but are interrupted every time “The Wave’’ comes around. Life is full for e oe young pianist From page 17 meet a lot of “influential peo- ple,’ she says. ‘‘It’s a way to get your foot in the door.” Mares has managed to get her foot in the door at the Peabody Conservatory, part of John Hopkins University. In September, she will fly to Baltimore to study with Leon Fleisher, considered the world’s foremost piano teacher. And the break from competi- tions will be a welcome one. Al- though they have become almost commonplace, Mares says she can live without them. “1 don't like competitions. | don’t think you can put people up against each other. People shouldn’t feel stressed out — it’s unnatural.” Fortunately for Mares, she doesn’t let the stress of competi- tions get to her. ‘You have to learn to deal with it. I’m not as nervous as I used to be. As soon as | go on stage | feel quite comfort- able. I’m extremely lucky that way.” Part of that confidence was fostered by her principal teacher, pianist Jane Coop, who taught Mares what to expect from her ca- reer, And her parents, neither of whom are musicians, have offered - a lot of support. Mares was lucky to have experi- enced none of the parental pressures that so often accompany the lives of child prodigies. ““My parents didn’t force me into taking lessons,’ she points out. Apart from piano classes in Banff and another competition this month — the Robert Casadesus International Competition — Mares is hoping to take time out from her rigorous schedule and live a little, perhaps at the Eagle Harbour Yacht Club where she is race director. “| have to be careful at my age not to let this (piano career) get too crazy,” she-says. “I want to lead as normal a life as possible.” Reiner directs with the same sure hand he showed on his four previous movies and, thanks to a smart script by Nora Ephron, this Manhattan comedy delivers solid laughs.
