Lions Gate Bridge repaving delayed REPAVING work on the Lions Gate Bridge will not be compieted at least until Sept. 19, weather permitting, according to the pro- ject’s manager. Original completior: date for the $65,000 project was today. but _ project manager Surinder Sahcta said Wednesday the work to repave the bridge will probably not be completed until this Tues- day. He added that any raix will delay the project’s completion beyond Tuesday because the asphait can not be spread in wet weather. Single-lane closures, therefore, will remain in effect weekdays from 19 a.m. te 2:36 p.ca. during the repaying work, which began last Friday. Because only one of the bridge’s (ree lanes can be closed at any one time during the overhaul, the 100 tonnes of asphalt being used to repave the bridge must be spread manually by crews using shovels and rakes. “It’s handwork paving,’? Sahota said, ‘‘and it’s taking too long.’’ f Sahota bas advised drivers to use the Second Narrows Bridge during the repaving project. : For more information call 660-320". Stanley Park | access reopened -f- IN A 5-2 vote Mondsy night, the Vancouver parks board voted to -[ reopen southbound access to Stanley Park from the park’s cause- way during momting rush hours. -f ° But northbound access to the causeway from the park during *-eveuing rush hours will remain closed indefinitely. f -. Reports to the board from the Vancouver City engineering - department, tke Vancouver Police Department, the provincial highways ministry and the company that patrols the bridge con- cluded that the southbound closures made no difference to morn- ing rush hour traffic flows. But those same reports stated that the evening closure of access to the causeway from the park had decreased the number of acci- dents, redueed the length of causeway traffic backups and cut the evening rush hour on the bridge significantly. Evening access to the causeway from the park will remain closed, therefore, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. during weekdays. The rush-hour closures were instituted March 13 as part of the board’s attempt to reduce accidents on the causeway during rush ) hours and prevent commuters from using Stanley Park as a short- cut.
