In response to your April 22
News Viewpoint, Why Still No
“911, 1 would like to clear up a
couple of misconceptions.

You stated that urgently needed
‘ help comes from the local fire
department within four to five
minutes, and I may add, usually
quicker.

A 911 system, to a certain
degree, does what you say it
-avoids, connects the caller to a
switchboard miles away from help,
not to the local fire department.

If a caller on the North Shore
was to call a North Shore 911 (if it
came to be) in the event of a medi-
cal emergency, the first thing he
would hear would be ‘‘police, fire
or ambulance.’’ The obvious

response would be ambulance. The
call would then be switched to the
Provincial Ambulance dispatch
centre in Vancouver, and an am-
bulance would be eventually
dispatched by their already
overloaded dispatcher. The fire
department may or may not be
notified by the ambulance service.

The bottom line is, if you need
emergency medical help, call your
local fire department direct. You
will have help there within one to
five minutes. The fire department
will immediately notify the am-
bulance service via their direct
phone line.
