Visitors’ spending
boosts economy

TOURISM IS big business in
Canada.

According to Tourjsm
Canada, the country’s
tourist industry maintains
450,000 full-time jobs and
generates over $18 billion
annually. In British Colum-
bia alone, tourism generates
$2.7 billion each year.

In 1983, 12.4 million
tourists visited Canada. Of
these visitors 63 per cent
stayed between two and six
nights and 25 per cent stayed
between seven and 13 nights.

Hotels were the preferred
accommodation. Over 37 per
cent of visitors stayed in
hotels, 33 per cent stayed in
motels and 29 per cent
stayed in tourist cabins or
outfitters.

Of American visitors, 21
per cent visited friends or
relatives in Canada and 63
per cent were in the country
for pleasure. Fourteen per
cent were in Canada on
business.

. Non-American visitors
were here mostly to visit
