Make your own ornaments

EARLY CANADIAN Christmas
tree decorations were handmade
and often edible.

Nuts, apples, dried grapes and
cockies of all descriptions were
hung on tree boughs along with
small baskets filled with candies
and sugar plums.

For this year’s tree, tiny pill bot-
tles or matchboxes wrapped as

Christmas gifts will make lovely
little tree ornaments when hung
with gold or silver cord or ribbon.
Plan to have a few ‘real’ gifts or
candies, small bars of soap or pot
pourri hanging on the tree for
unexpected guests bearing gifts.

Children can make old fash-
ioned crepe paper decorations such
as paper fans using gift wrap, and

color coordinate them to go with
gifts under the tree.

To make a paper fan, cut a strip
of gift wrap, nine by three inches
with pinking shears and pleat it
sideways.

Stitch the pleats together at one
end with needie and thread or bind
with tape.

Open out the fan and tie to the
tree with coordinating ribbon.
