By CHRIS LLOYD Firemen could see the plumes of black smoke even from the main firehall in West Vancouver. But when they went chasing off in their firetrucks they became puzzled as to how the fire seemed to be keeping a step ‘ahead of them. At first, they were alar- med because they thought it looked like West Bay Elementary School might be going up in smoke. When they got there, they found that not only was the school intact, but that the thick smoke cloud had moved further west. The mystery was finally solved when the fire crew reached Sandy Cove and found the Royal Hudson steam train stopped on the line, with engineers ad- justing the fuel mixture. The problem had arisen by the regular Royal Hudson locomotive, the 3716, being out of commission with a cracked front tire (wheel rim) and the museum piece backup engine - the 2860 - being used for the train trips between North Vancouver and Squamish. B.C. Rail spokesman Hugh Armstrong said the replacement train engine had not been used for a while and was having “a good cleanout” which was responsible for the unusually heavy smoke. The 2860 has remained in service on the route during the past week, although the “cleanout” appears to have been completed, since there has been considérably less smoke belching out. than when the fire department sprung into action the previous Friday. NO SMOKE PROBLEMS now the train engine has had a good clearout after making the Royal Hudson run a few times. The 3716 Is still being used on the route while the usual train is undergoing repairs.
