8- Wednesday, September 16, 1992 ~ North Shore News MAILBOX Crossing border jeopardizes future Dear Editor: I have asked our three levels of elected representatives in North Vancouver for their support to commence. an economic summit meeting to stop excessive cross- border shopping. -l stated that, as elected repre- sentatives, they have been debating over the Constitution, justice and social problems for many: years. Consequently they have ignored the weakening of our economy and layoffs in Canada. We know that unemployment — and bankruptcies can lead to human stress, family breakups, assaults and fatalities. _ _ Lused to be a business manager and worked 14 hours a day to Jmaintain an average standard of ‘living. ‘But now I have given up on the long hours because of the futility of. zero ‘gain. for my ef- forts. My children need to find jobs each summer {to support themselves while they pursue a college education. As you know, jobs are now hard to find. Yet politicians are refusing to accept blame for the recession. They pass the blame onto the global recession. I don’t accept that! When I compare other industri- alized countries with ours, | main- tain that a country such as Japan has better government leaders than Canada has. Needless to say, they can build a stronger economy with fewer natural resources than we can with a rich resource base. For instance, many companies that. { have seen are limited in their ability to hire any summer students because their retail “business has experienced tough times.: Even worse, I noticed in the Vancouver Sun this summer some published publicity about Cana- dian shoppers on July | at Bell- ingham. This | think is damaging to the reputation and invested efforts of local business entrepreneurs and corporations. This sort of negative promotion just helps to kill the much-needed encouragement which smali business entrepreneurs need to start and. nurture a business in Canada. We need to organize our business skills more effectively each day and convince Canadian cross-border shoppers that we must increase jobs in Canada now or our young people will not have any security and a future career to sustain themselves. I believe that these young peo- ple are from our own family and we must protect them first. I suggest we create and exercise six-month development plans to build Canada’s economy now, be- fore it is too late. G. Hee North Vancouver : Learning more about Agriculture Canada " » Dear Editor: "It has’ "been reported that ‘Agriculture Canada has set out’ . 14,000 pheromone traps and many of these have been installed on the ‘North Shore to verify the threat _ of the Asian gypsy moth pest that, ” according: to. those community in- ‘formation meetings, was about to . tavage and destroy the ornamental “bushes.on our hillsides. - “Spray the Children - As an amateur lepidopterist and objector to the governments’ Gypsy Moth Campaign,’’ | would like to share an observation with other readers. So far none of those littl red insect-tepees has been found more than 25 feet from the edge of a roadway. Many, in fact, can be seen secured — at car window height — to vegetation that grows to the very edge of our streets. Either the federal experts at Agriculture Canada expect the Asian moth to commute in fleets of Hondas and Toyotas — or could it be that we have at long last discovered the maximum distance that federal bureaucrats travel without stopping for a cof- fee break! .
