Ellen is not cal a North Shore treasure, but to many she will always be their Angel of the Island — Bowen Island, that is. Being a natural nurturer throughout her life, Ellen’s pri- mary concern has been people, - especially those in need, including, animals. Bad weather and rough terrain did not keep her from attending her patients. Reing a natural nurcurer and out of work, Ellen then opened her own 35-bed pri- vate care facility in Burnaby, the MeKay Private Nursing Home which she ran success- fully until 1965, when she sold the property. Ellen married Percy Charles Dorman in 1938 and bore two children, Mary Ellen and James Douglas. Elen aow has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. When there, she was offen called to treat che sick and injured. She remembers: “It was back in about 1960s the Island held an Ellen Dorman Day in my honour. Everyone closed shop and came to the party -- it was a great party.” So alter closing her business in 1965, her family moved to Bowen Island permanently. Why Bowen Island? Perev’s parents, Jacob and Sarah Dorman, had settled at Dorman Bay on Bowen in the 1880s and died there in the laze °30s. Ellen became an inte- graf part of the community, as an unpaid, unofficial public heatth nurse providing medical care to the sick and injured on the entire island, taking care of humans and animals alike.
