the owner's routine as they
leave the house: brushing hair
and teeth, applying
perfime/cologne, looking for
car keys. These are all sense
impressions which trigger the
nervous and anxious behav-
jour, Anti-separation anxicty
training can now be difficult
beeause the dog knows your
subtle departure cues.

The first thing vou want te
do is to change vour departure
routine. When you leave and
return, don’t make ita big
deal, just give the dog a patron
the head and leave. Leave tor
only short periods of me at
first and gradually work up to
long periods of time.
