@ The Kimono Influence, Ferry Building Gallery, West
Vancouver. To July 18.

LONG thought of as the quintessentiaily Japanese
garment, the kimono, in fact, originated in China.
Adopted by the Japanese in the seventh century AD, it was
quickly adopted into the local culture, used as a vehicle of
political and social statements, as a means of identifying rank
and as a canvas for the highest artistic expressions of the day.

The kimono’s timeless beaury, grace and sensuality have
intrigued Europeans and Americans since the mid-19th century,
when Japan opened its borders. With its classic shape and simple
fines, the kimono lends itself to embellishment and ornamenta-
tion, inspiring, artists to devise new ways to celebrate its form.

Following in the tradition of the artists of the American
art-to-wear movement of the 1970s, five North Shore textile
artists have explored the kimonce in all its guises.

Anne Marie Andrishak, Rosalind Aylmer, Emiko Carley,
Celia Pickies and Sharmini Wirasckara share a love of textiles
and surface design. Tied together by the kimono influence
and a love of fine craftsmanship, their art, on display now at
the Ferry Building Gallery, reveals their creative differences.

Their offerings range from needlework pillows inspired by the
Japanese quilting stitch known as sashike to the kimono inter-
preted in miniature in copper wire and life-size in painted silk.

The gallery complements the exhibition with a series of
special events. Learn to fold intricate Origami shapes with
Emiko Carley on Thursday, July 8, noon to I p.m. in che
gallery. On Saturday, July 10, 4 to 6 p.m., Sharmini
Wirasckara will share the art of off-loom bead weaving. Those
who are interested should bring a Size 12 beading needle,
Nymo D thread and a selection of beads. On Wednesday, July
14, 7:30 p.m., Rosalind Aylmer will discuss the history of the
kimono and its influence on the art-to-wear movement in an
evening of slides.
