I received an interesting
phone call the other day.

A distraught woman asked
if] knew of any good veterinar-
ians. She needed a second
opinion because she was _con-
vinced her dog was deaf) but
her vet said her dog Frisco was
perfectly fine.

“Why are you convinced
your dog is deaf?” 1 asked.

“Because she won’t come
when I call her, so I thought
maybe her hearing was bad!”
she exclaimed.

Wouldn’: it be wonderful if
our dogs really did have inter-
mittent deafness? We wouldn’t
have to’ look like fools as we
screamed at the top of our

away from us.

Getting a dog to return on
command scems to be the
exception rather than the rule.
Well no more, my fair canine
caretakers. I’m going to teach
you a no-fail recall.

Canine trainer Jack Volhard
once said: “If your dog won’t

come when it’s called, you
don’t have a dog.”

Yet the standard method of
training a recall does not seem
to create a desire in the dog to
make a speedy return to its
handler.

One of these methods is to
attach a long leash to a dog.
The handler says, “Spor
come!” then pulls on the fead
while recting the dog in like a
big salnion.

According to canine learn-
ing theory, the dog learns that
“Spot come!” means an
uncomfortable tug on the
neck. Heck, if I was a dog
trained this way I’d take off in
