BRITISH Columbia is the focus of a unique new
three-year project examining the use of bicycle hel-
mets and safety promotion prograins.

Using a $500,000 (US) grant from the U.S. Centre for
Disease Control, the Onawa-based Traffic Injury Research
Foundation (TIRF) and the U.S. Highway Safety Research
Centre will determine the impact of B.C.’s bievele helmet law
and will implement and evaluate bicyele heimet promotion pro-
grams in various B.C. communities.

“As B.C. is the only jurisdiction in North America that makes
bieyele helmets mandétory for evelists of all ages, the province is
the ideal choice for research on hicyele helmet effectiveness,”
TIRF president and CEO Herb Simpsen said.

Last vear, five evelists were killed on BC. roads and 1,083
were injured. B.C.’s helmet Jaw for evelists went into effect in
September, 1996. It’s designed to help save lives and prevent
serious head injuries.

‘The three vear initiative will include a detailed analysis of bicy-
ele injury and crash data, an examination of the helmet usage
rate, interviews with cyclists, an evaluation of the impact of B.C.
helmet law and the implementation of community programs and
measures to promote the satety benetits of helmet use. Local sate-
ty organizations and cycling advocates will be consulted.
