JOAN (Baty) Smart,
was born in Edmentoa
in 1912 and lived in
the Ontario towns of
London, Ottawa, and
Toronto.

Her father was in the per-
: manent army and served in
World War I, so the family
moved frequently.

- She remembers fire
engines, drawn by horses
careening down the street in
Ottawa.

Joan met her husband,
George, in Toronto in 193),
and they were married there

| in 1933. They lef the
‘ church under an arch of
swords from two rcgiments:
‘the Royal Canadian
Dragoons (her father’s) and

the Royal Canadian Corps of

Signals. (her husband’s).
When the Second World

War broke out, they were
stationed in Kingston,
Ontario. George was posted
to England, while Joan
stayed behind with their. two
daughters. This. way an anx-
ious time for her, since her
parents were also in
England, which was being
attacked by enemy bombers.
{n 1943, George was
assigned to Vancouver, in

order to prepare for a possi-
ble attack from Japan via the
Aleutian islands.

Joan and the children
joined him, and they rented
a house near Marine Drive in
West Vancouver. By this
time, they had four daugh-
ters, and raising a family dur-
