IN recent months ordinary citizens like you and me have been bombarded with the sordid details of the American [resident’s extra-marital sex life. And we've learned 4 lot in the process, haven't we? Like what really goes on behind the ed deers of the Oval Office, and acw and unique ways to enjoy a cigar. And what about the new familiarity the press and the general public feel reading about and discussing things normally considered com- pletely private? Why, at my own parents’ dinner table night T heard the term oral sex spoken by both my grand- mother and my aunt, and neither of them even batted an eye! Pil cell you what. This whole Clinton sex scandal has giver: most of us an edu cation in human nature the likes of which we could never have imagined a cou- ple of years ago. But to me the most impertant lesson of all has all but been Jost in the pub- lication of the titillating crotic details of the President’s sexual exploits: adultery is devastating to those who once loved and trusted the adulterer, ic. his or her family. *m speaking specifically of Hillary and Chelsea Clinton. Despite Hillary Clinton’s obvious political motivation in life, and even taking into account her tough girl act and hee beefy rear end, neither she nor any other person in a marriage deserves to be betrayed by their partner. “You don’t screw around with a married man unless you’re pretty comfortable with . destroying his family.” I don’t care how sympa- thetic you are to Bill Clinton, it is his wife Hilla who has been disrespected, dishonored, betrayed, hurt, humiliated, and demeaned publicly by his thoughtless acts. And there is no amount of press harassment of the President or public humilia- tion he will endure that will ever match the emotional pain that she undoubtedly has felt in past months. The second victim of Bill Clinton’: inability to think with the brain in his head {as apposed to the one in his pants) is his daughter Chelsea You betrays his w his tanuils. What kind of a message does President Clinton s his daughter with this betrayal? Let me take a shot at it: I don’t care cnough about my family to be true to them; I don’t respect my family enough to be honest with th I don’t honor my family enough to protect them from scandal; and their sense of emotional safety and security with me unimportant in the face of my lust for sex. As a mother, I can’t help but wonder what Chelsea Clinton is feeling. No doubt she loves her father, but what do you really suppose this intelligent young woman thinks about his behaviour? My guess is thar bel:ind the cheerful facade there is an innocent young girl who feels confused and betr. who will probably ha trouble crusting any man in the furure. Some people have been speaking in sympathetic tones about Monica Lewinsky, about how she is a victim in this affair as well. I strongly disagree. Monica Lewinsky is nota victim here, rather she isa willing accomplice in this betrayal. She knew Bill on was a married man. yman who also betrays mailbox oan. But his insensitivity towards natives and the treaty process shows a glaring lack of knowledge of what the whole proccss is sup- posed to redress, Canada is not seeking to redress the sins of colonization, merely to finally fulfil the explicit obligations we undertook in. the Royal Proclamation of 1763. Until the Klondike Goldrush brought ai abrupt end to the Douglas Treaties (already negotiated on Vancouver Island), Great Britain was negotiating the extinguishment of native land claims across Canada. The discovery of B.C. gold gave the land dy) a whole new value and the treaty process was abandoned for 130 years. It is far too convenient to readily accept the bounty our ancestors provided us, with- out accepting some of the debt. Noel Wright doesn’t want to pay, and aei- ther do I, but previous generations should have settied this issue. We promised to extinguish alf native land claims, and we have a moral obligation to complete this proc If we don’t, future generations will have to, and it is not going to get cheaper. Further, if Mr. Wright wants tax cuts, he might be better off setting his aim on the $19 billion (Employment Insurance) unemploy- ment surplus.
