PHOENIX — It used
to be that Mesa, a
sprawling community
15 minutes from Sky
Harbor Airport, was
net known for very
much but trailer parks.

Not that Mesa folk
objected; same sun but you
don’t get burned, they
would say.

Golfers had a secret how-
ever, and that was a handful
of great courses, such as Red
Mountain Ranch and
Superstition Springs, where
the green fees were modest.

I found it a classy opera-
son, a tough, handsome
course without being overly
manicured. and have to men-
tion the best hot dog stand
in Arizona.

Take that, Troon North.

Also in the Mesa package
is Pete Dve's ASU Karsten,
with three holes said to be
the most difficult in the state
and the 18th of the bese
ftimshing holes in the West
‘including California and
Hawaii.

Gold Canyon is another
grand golfing experience in
the Arizona desert. while a
couple [ played with were
jooking forward to returning
to the lush, rolling fairways
of Oconilio.
