‘That’s the idea behind
Arts Awareness Week, April 21 to 26 at the Ferry
Building Galler

Horseshoe Bay firefighter and artist Ross Penhall,
champion rower turned painter Bobbi Burgers and
portrait master Stuart Slind had their first solo shows
at the West Van waterfront gallery. All three now
have their work in the city’s top commercial galleries. tre)

Penhall is represented by the Buschlen Mowatt on the
Georgia Street, Burgers by Diane Farris on W, 7th
Avenue and Slind by the Bau-Xi on South Granville.

The show has the support of all three galleries, exhi-
bition coordinator Ruth Pay’ ne, and artists’ agents may show
up at the Tuesday Night Live panel discussion moderated by
art consultant Ingunn Kemble (April 21, 7 p.m.) or
Wednesday evening’s chat session with the artists, also at 7
p.m. The public i s invited to attend both sessions.

The gallery is tocated at 1414 Argyle St. Also included in
the show are works by First Nations artists Xwa Lack ‘Tun
(Rick Harry) and Wade Baker, and photographers Cindy
Goodman, Liz McColl and Harold Ma; painiings by Carole
Armston, ceramics by Zoltan Kiss, drawings by Patricia
Baldwin, etchings by the late Alistair Bell and artwork by stu-
dents of Capilano College’s studio arts program and West
Vancouver schools.

Astute shoppers may have spotted Johnson rolling
the mails with actors Ruth Nichol and Jane Mortifee in
tow this past month.

‘The tio were in search of glamor gowns for Side by
Side by Sondheim, which opened Tuesday at the Arts
Club Theatre. Johnson also designed the set and oucfir-
ted narrator Bernard Cuffling and actor Patrick Rose for
the show.

The mu: revuc is a tribute to master lyri
composer Stephen Sondheim, whose Broadwav hits
include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum, Gypsy and Wes: Side Story. The show runs to May
16.

Commission, the award recog-
nizes homegrown talent who
have risen to national or inter-
national acclaim.

Successful candidates will be
honored at a FANS Award
Night in October, a benefit for
the Fund for the Arts on the
North Shore (FANS), which
assists artists and arts groups
through grants and scholar-
ships.
Tast year’s FANS honorees
include composer Jean
Coulthard, singer Roy Forbes,
and puppet makers Luman and
Arlyn Coad

nominee must be a living
resident of the North Shore
and have a substantial and
nationally recognized body of
work in the performing, liter-
ary or visual arts.
