The introduction of the redesigned F-150 in January of 1996 helped spur sales even more — F-Series sales were up 23% in 1996. The heavy-duty F-250 pickup was added to the F- Series line last Fall. The main differences between the F-250 and the F-150 are the F-250’s higher towing and payload capacity, a bigger standard engine, seven-bolt wheels instead of five-bolt, and a beefier suspension. In addition, the F-250 comes with some options that are not available on the F-150, including four wheel disc brakes with ABS, an air-assist- ed load-leveling rear suspen- sion, heavy duty 130 amp alternator, 78 amp battery improved engine cooiing sys- tem, and an auxiliary transmis- sion oil cooler. Another important differ- ence benween the F-150 and the F-250 is that the latter is available with only one wheel- base (138.5 in.) whereas the F-150 is offered with three wheelbases. It should be noted that F- series pickups over 8500 Ibs GVWR stil use the old F- series body style. This includes the F-250 HD, F-350, and F- Super Duty pickups. Like the F- 150, the F-250 is available with a regular (two or three passenger) cab or extended (five or six passen- ger) cab which Ford calls a ‘Supercab’.
