Fantastic farm critters subject of artist's work Evelyn jacob SPOTLIGHT FEATURE N 1990, Peter Kiss gave up a promising career in architecture to become a full-time fine artist. “It's real Freucian stuff. My father was an architect so | decided not to be one,” explains the relentlessly cheerful sculptor. Surely there must have been another reason for his leap from the respectability of designing buildings to the uncertainty of carving giani biue fish sticks out of wood. Freudian or not, Kiss stood to inherit his father’s prestigious Vancouver firm, which wasn’t something to sneeze at. Typically, he offers a playful - explanation: “Art was a hobby and | needed a real job. So | said, ‘Hmm, sounds like architecture.’ But it wasn’t for me. Too many straight fines.” His first career, as a marine biologist, apparently didn’t suit nim either. “I didn’t ike living in the bush, and there’s only so Many artistic things you can do with dead fish,” he says archly. Kiss’ reasons for parting with his past professions are as whim- sical as his sculptural creations. Silly looking birds, oversized fish, fantastic farm critters paint- ed in all the boid colors o’ the rainbow are as light-hearted and primitive as kindergarten realism. His fascination with wordplay has spawned a whole collection of humorous carvings — they're really sick jokes that speak to the West Vancouver native’s sense of the absurd.
