Learn better parenting

through brief workshop

DO YOU want to improve your
parenting skills but lack the time
to enrol in weekly courses?

Family Services of the North
Shore (FSNS) is sponsoring six
brief workshops on a variety of
parenting topics. Each complete
course, taught by a professional
family-life educator, is two to six
hours in length.

Winning at Parenting (Saturday,
Oct. 2, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) is based
upon Barbara. Coloroso’s video
“Winning at Parenting Without
Beating Your Kids.”? Learn why
children misbehave, ‘communica-
tion skills, effective discipline, and
positive parenting techniques.

Anger’ and family living go
hand-in-hand.’ Why Do 1 Get So
Mad At My Kids? workshop
(Saturday, Oct. 30, 9 a.m. to 4
p.m.) is a shortened version of the
popular. five-week course. Learn
how to express and. understand
anger without emotional outbursts
or negatively affecting your child’s
self-esteem:

Siblings — ‘Friends or Foes?
(Saturday, Oct. 16, 9 a.m. to
12:30 p.m.) provides practical
skills to help parents cope and

that is a natural part of family
life,

Parents and caregivers can learn
techniques to encourage 2 healthy
self-concept in the children they
care for. Building Your Child’s
Self-Esteem (Saturday, Oct. 23, 9
a.m, to 12:30 p.m.) demonstrates
how children value thernselves
when they feel valued by the im-
portant people in their lives.

Several workshops are offered
for families in transition or for
those with specific concerns:
Children and Divorce (Tuesday,
Oct. 19, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.),
Beyond the Brady Bunch — Un-
derstanding Your Stepfamily
(Saturday, Nov. 6, 9 a.m. to 4
and Single Parenting
(Saturday, Oct. 23, 9 am. to 4
p.m.) .

mark its 10th anniversary

The North Shore group of
Amnesty International meets reg-
ularly on the final. Monday of
each month to write letters on
behalf of prisoners, to hear
speakers and to discuss the issue
of human rights generally.
