100 MILE HOUSE — One o of the first things you are likely to find on the Buffalo Ladies’ ranch is a pair of Belgian draught horses who live behind a fence a abust cat could kick down. They will probably come up to you to have their heads scratched. They are friendly as a pair of two-ton Newfoundland dogs. Both are stallions, but neither one knows that he is supposed to be jealous of the other and fighting to the death. Neither horse has ever done an hour's work in his life. “We were going to use them for horse logging, but ihat was a pro- ject we never found time for,” says Anne Bashem, who wears gumboots and a pleasant smile. She came from Stonehenge, Engiand, and used to ride in fox hunts when she was young. This day she’s working on the tractor. Two light little fences over, we meet the other Buffalo Lady, Lily Waller, who is using a chainsaw to cut firewood for the house. She wears a T-shirt that reads “¥'m Not Over the Hill, I’m Just Gathering Specd.”’ She’s being helped by Lucy, a young woman of 21 who looks about 14. Lucy shakes hands and smiles. She can make sounds but cannot speak. She was born with brain dam- age and has lived most of her life with the Buffalo Ladies. **No matter when ;ou come back here, Lucy will know your face,”’ says Anne. ‘‘She has an extraordinary memory for faces."’ By sounds and gestures, Lucy conveys the news that the cat died. OF old age, of course, the only way anything ever dies on the Buffalo Ladies’ ranch. Everywhere you find pen- sioners, the owners excepted. They are both 63. Their pet dog died at age 19 and has a grave in the front yard. Paul St. Pierre PAULITICS & PERSPECTIVES His place has been taken by Elizabeth Taylor, sometimes also called Queen Elizabeth, a pot- bellied pig who tries to chew off your shoe laces while you are tak- ing tea in the dining room. However, unlike the deceased cat, the pig cannot get up on the table and heip itself from the cream jug. Their house, a Panabode, they erected themselves. They made mistakes, such as putting all their electrical circuits ona single breaker, but all things come to those who keep trying. They have built saost of what you see on this ranch which is tucked into a foid of the hills about 30 kilometres west of 100 Mile House. However it be done, reviving and running an 1888 ranch is no meagre accomplishment and this is why almost everybody in Cariboo knows the Buffalo Ladies or has heard respectful reports of them. Hf they have any sadness it is that hunters have built a cabin on the opposite shore of the lake and at night they can see the lights of its windows. ‘They had hoped to live out their lives on Buffalo Lakes without ever having to see another house light at night. Lily taught special! classes at the nearby school for 26 ycars and retired recently. Anne was a physiotherapist. They lived on a berry farm for a year in Richmond before coming to the moosemcat and huckleberry country of Cariboo in 1959. They raise Black Angus cattle, not for meat but for breeding stock. These are good looking, sleak animals who seem contented as the Borden cows, but why shouldn't they be? The Buffalo Ladies have just obtained their first summer range rights. It ix a question if these cows will want to stay on a loncly summer range or, like homesick kids at summer camp, insist on being taken home. ““We do have a bit of a problem with retired cows,"’ says Lily. She refers tv some, how many she docsn't say precisely, who have been dry for some years and should long ago have gone to the dinner tables. The Buffalo Ladies cannot bear the thought of them being trucked off to a slaughterhouse. They are considering asking a neighbor to come over here and shoot the cows while they’re not expecting anything. Two other pensioners are Shetland ponies, neither of which has ever been ridden. One of them has foundered and must be shot, but by whom, and in what circumstances that won’t make his last moments unhappy? Onc is reminded that dear old England did not unerringly select her most practical sons and daughters to send to the New World. She sent some of the other kind to remind us that there is a place in our land for kindness and for joyousness.
