Elizabeth McNeight, a longtime NVCP member, is active in the group doing music and choreography. She describes the club as ‘‘a training ground where people can wet their feet’’ and go on to larger pursuits or simply keep pouring their energy into focal produc- tions, by acting, directing, design- ing or working backstage. Says McNeight: ‘The thing is, in amateur theatre it’s for the love of theatre. People who do it for the love of it are willing to put in more hours.”’ The love of theatre is bringing some former members from as far away as England and Hawaii to at- tend the anniversary events. jean Chard (nee Mitchell), trav- elled from Cornwall, England, to attend the celebration on June 19 and 20. She was a member of the club for — her face registers shock — 31 years, starting in 1961. Fellow member Ann Wedding hastens to add: “‘Jean’s been in- volved from generation to genera- tion!’’ referring to her two daugh- ters who are now involved in the group. The event takes place on Saturday, June 20, at 1:30 p.m. Members of the Players will be strolling around in costume, and. with royalty in the headlines, this may be a good time to bend the ear of Queen Elizabeth or Vic- ~toria, both of whom will grace the garden party with their royal "presence (well, living replicas of them). Past members are invited to _come in the costume of their ‘most memorable role, which, given the scope of productions, coutd prove visually interesting. . The afternoon will feature A Showcase of Talent, a one-hour presentation of skits made up of scenes from past productions, including Home and Amadeus. Member Elizabeth McNeight says the showcase will have “musical comedy, a bit of Noel Coward, also some tried and true sketches from our successful cabaret.” There will also be vocal numbers from Barb Brolly, _ Charles McNeight, Janice McLean and Leigh Richards. Showtimes are 2 and 4 p.m. and possibly 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 (that’s a 1952 price) and can be reserved by calling 261-1442. Wedding says that community theatre is a good place to start when you move into a new com- munity. “It got me through the Regina winters. x Opens a new spectrum of friends,’ she says. Incidently, that’s how she met her husband. Wedding wrote te John Clerse for permission to perform scenes from Fawlty Towers, one of the club’s hits. ‘He wrote back in a week and said it was fine.... He sent us -telegrams for each performance.” Wedding also recalls a particular shi-zu dog in the production who brought the house down every time when he bit Manuel — on cue. Talking to its members, it’s ob- vious that the theatre club enjoys a great camaraderie. There's something more than the theatre that keeps the group thriving. “We're not only strong ar- tistically but emotionally,”’ McNeight says. “There's been a lot of caring over the years for people.
