Hikers found RESCUE CREWS and helicopters were used Sunday and Monday to search for five lost hikers and a large dog after the party failed ta return from a hiking and camp- ing trip to the Cypress Mouniain area. The five were located Monday morning on 4 steep, _ forested slope. Other than being cold, they were not in- jured. North Shore Search and Rescue coordinator Ross Peterson said the five had left Saturday to go hiking along the Howe Sound Crest Trail towards Lions Bay. The group was expected to return on Sunday. Wien the hikers failed to show up, emergency crews were notified. North Shore Search and Rescue, along with Liens Bay Search and Rescue, began the search at 11 p.m. Sunday. Peterson said one search team followed the lost hikers’ trail up the Howe Sound Crest Trail into the area of Unnecessary Mountain while a second search team sear- ched in the oppesite direction in a bid to “intercept them before they get info any trouble.”* Peterson, who had not spoken to the five by press time Monday, warned that hikers should be careful of the areas they venture into. “ft (the area where hikers were found) is a danger- ous area to be in," said Peterson. An unattended candie caused a fire at 412 West Esplanade on Dec. 23. A fire department spokesman said a candle set a small coffee table on fire in the apartment building.
