Another spot crying out to lead
a more useful life is the space
underneath interior stairways. If
this area is already an open space
in your home, chances are you
have used it as a dumping ground
for everything from bicycles to
vacuum cleaners.

This space could be straightened
_up or, in other homes, opened up,
to have three small closets that
graduate in size as the stairs as-
cend,

Other designers have used this
space by building graduated
storage bins on casters that roll
out then retreat back under the
stairway to hide behind a smocth
facade.

Bins under a stairway are one
storage bonanza; using the space
above the stairs is another. If you
have a set of stairs leading to your
basement, consider adding extra
storage with a “‘scaletta.”’

an imaginative eye toward storage.
Instead of just keeping a spare
roll of toilet paper under the vani-
ty, what about installing a rol!l-
away hamper?

While you're in the bathroom,
think about extending your tub’s
storage capacity by adding a
painted or polyurethaned ledge
around the rim for bottles and
jars.

Space over the tub is also often
up for grabs. Most people only
need about seven feet of vertical
space for showering; that leaves
the area between the shower head
and the ceiling for built-in storage
compartments.
