Llamas to lure West Van seniors

seniors trip

LLAMAS MET West Van-
couver seniors earlier this
week to preview a planned
Whistler wilderness day-trip
that will see the exotic pack
animals teamed with
members of the West Van-
couver Senior Activity Cen-
tre.

The encounter was coordinated
by Shelley Carey, a Capilano Col-
lege ouldvor recreation manage-
ment student working at the
seniors centre as a recreation pro-
grammer.

Carey has planned a summer
schedule full of unusual recre-
ational trips for local seniors.

“Because they (the centre) have
active groups already, we're trying
to get the people who don't al-
ready belong to the walking group
and the hiking group to get into
recreation and = experience new
things. Sometimes it lakes some-
thing like Hamas to get people out
ona hike,"’ Carey said.

On July 11, seniors will take a
scenic [44-hour hike into
Calcheak Park, just south of
Whistler. Seven tlamas will sup-
port the group, carrying tables,
chairs and coolers for a picnic
tunch,

Said Carey, ‘'They've already
carried an outhouse in for us."’
