Shore low-income housing TWO LARGE social housing pro- jects on the North Shore have been awarded funds from the fed- * eral and provincial governments. By Surj Rattan News Reporter The Lynn Valley Lions Housing Society has been granted final ap- proval for a new $6-million social housing project that will result in 46 new homes being built for low-income families in North Vancouver District. The project will two-bedroom units, 22 three- bedroom units and = six four- bedroom units for families who have difficulty finding suitable and affordable housing. To ensure that the tenants pay no more than 30% of their in- come for rent, annual subsidies totalling $622,000 will be advanc- ed to the society once the project provide 18 is completed and all the units are occupied. The federal government will contribute two-thirds of the amount through the Canada Mor- tgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) while the provincial gov- ernment will add one-third of the cost through the B.C. Housing Management Commission (BCHMC), which will also ad- minister the program. Both levels of government will jointly insure the first’ mortgage financing of $6,031,718 for the housing developineni. The provincial government has leased the development site at 1025-1083 Premier St. to the Lynn Valley Lions Housing Society for 60 years. Meanwhile, 88 new homes sill be built for lower income families and seniors in West Vancouver now that the Kilahanee Park Housing Society has approval to build a new $8.4 million social housing project in the district. Construction of the develop- ment adjacent to Earl's restaurant on Marine Drive is to begin tater this year. When the project is complete, it will provide 56 one-bedroom units for seniors, including two wheelchair-modified units, plus 14 two-bedroom units, 12 three- bedroom units, two wheelchair- modified three-bedroom units and four four-bedroom units. The housing will be used for families and seniors who have dif- ficulty finding suitabie, affordable shelter, As with the tenants in the North Vancouver District project. the West Vancouver tenants of the social housing project will not pay more than 30% of their income for rent. Annual subsidies totall- ing $850,000 will be advanced to the society once the project is oc- cupied. The provincial and federal gov- ernmments will jointly insure the first mortvave financing of $8,405,650 for the housing devel- opment.
