WEST COAST JUNIOR HOCKEY Flames nip Burnaby IN WEEKEND West Coast Junior Hockey League action the North Shore Winter Club Flames staged a dramatic 8-7 overtime win over the league-leading Bummaby Bluehawks on Saturday, but then fell 6-3 to the Northwest Americans in Seattle the following night. With time running out in regular season play, the weekend’s games leave the Flames in the sixth and final playoff position, one point behind Seattle and one point ahead of seventh-place Hastings. The prolific Scott Gordon-Brad Costa duo figured in all but one of the eight goals scored against the Bluehawks. Costa netted four goals and assisted on three while North Shore SEVERAL NORTH Shore athictes hit the top three in their events at the B.C. Winter Games held in Penticton last weekend. Gordon was right behind with a hat trick and three assists. The Gordon from Costa com- bination opened scoring in the first Period with two carbon copy power-play goals just seven se- conds apart, and then a John Cox power-play marker from Wade Bartok anc Gordon midway through the frame put the Flames up 3-0. With four minutes remain- ing in the period, Costa converted from Rick Rougeau to give the Flames a 4-0 lead after one. The Flames outscored Burnaby 3-2 in the second period for a 6-3 lead after two periods. Costa ac- counted for both markers, giving him his natural hat trick. Yim athletes bring Alpine skier Erica Purves of West Vancouver finished second in slalom and third in giant slalom. Grade 11 Argyle student James Stoddart drew assists on both goals while Cox and Marcel Desjardins collected an assist each on the respective goals. Flame penalties in the third period opened the door for the Bluehawks who waltzed in with three unanswered power-play goals to knot the score at six, five minutes into the frame, and then took a 7-6 lead with an equal strength goal at 14:38. But with only 21 seconds re- maining, and goaltender Kevin Radbourne pulled for a sixth at- tacker, Costa scored from Gordon and Bartok to set up the Gor- don-Costa winner twenty-seven se- conds into overtime. Burnaby outshot the Flames 56-24, In Sunday’s loss to Seattle, the Flames trailed 1-0 after one, 4-2 at the end of two, and then outscored 2-1 for the 6-3 final. Flame goalscorers were Dave Atkinson, Kevin Alexander and Rob Tour- nier while Andrew Wilson, Dave Shepard, Cox and Gordon picked up the assists. Seattle outshot the Flames 37-31 with Gar: Knight in goal for the locals. On Sat ‘rday, Feb. 24, the Flames meet the Americans in a rematch at the regular 9 p.m. game time at the Winter Club. home B.C. Bluehawks |fegister for racquetball tournament TODAY IS the last day to regis- ter for the fourth annual North Shore Racquetball Tournament. Events are filling up quickly, but there’s still space to register for the tourney which will be held Feb. 28 to March 3. The events include mens, ladies, mixed and senior men for all levels of players and the mat- ches will be held at the North Shore Winter Club and Court- house West. Games start at 6 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday with the finals taking place on Satur- day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is a large tourney with or- ganizers aiming for 130 entrants.
