Given the fact that some coking will develop, the key to for- North Shore News CARE mulating a good motor oi! tor tur- bocharged engines is the level of detergent and dispersant additives used in the motor oil. Detergents aid in keeping all engine surfaces clean of deposits such as coked motor oil. While the detergents deter de- posit buildup, dispersants sur- round the dirt and suspend it until the oil is changed. The introduction of Valvoline Turbo Formula in 1984 marked the first time that consumers had ac- to. a motor especially for engines. Specifically, this motor oil pro- cess vided greater oxidation and anti-wear oil designed turbocharged better deposit controls, Water around the turbo bearings to cool the hot surfaces and reduce the coolant protection than oils formulated for naturally aspirated engines. Aside from proper motor oil maintenance, the only protection turbos have from being ruined by the coking upon engine shutdown are aftercoolers. circulated Bring you 4 Great Service Specials ALAN CUTTRISS SERVICE MANAGER / PLAZA LINCOLN MERCURY ANDY ALBURY _ SERVICE ADVISOR LLL LL LLL SLL PLAZA LINCOLN MERCURY ® Installation of Motorcraft spark plugs ® Check timing belt © Carburetor adjustment ® A thorough inspection of: Distributor cap, cocling system. hoses, spark plug wires, PCV valve, air and fuel filters (non-electronic ignition, Lincoin, Econoline and Aerostar extra) 40W40 Premium Motor Oil plus a new Motorcraft FL-1-A Oil Filter. This in turn also protects and prolongs the life of motor oil ad- ditives so vital to the lubricant’s effectiveness. Coking and cooling aside, motor oils for turbos still must perform the same basic functions as do motor oils in normally aspirated engines: preventing metal from rubbing directly against other metal; reducing excessive friction; cooling and cleaning the engine and dispersing contaminants. Most of these duties are handled by additives, the real heart and soul of the motor oil. (In general, the composition of motor oil is about 80 per cent base stock and 20 per cent additives.) Additives such as antioxidants, viscosity index improvers, friction modifiers and foam inhibitors all serve to aid in the overall perfor- mance and maintenance of the engine. Oxidation is a problem that can occur in both turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines. Oxygen is whipped into the motor oil due to high temperatures and the chuming action of the engine parts. (The rate of oxida- tion doubles for every increase of 18° above 200°F.) Oxidation tends to thicken the motor oil, reducing its effec- tiveness. All lubricating oils have some natural antioxidants. At low or moderate temperatures, these an- tioxidants help to retard oxidation. But at high temperatures, how- ever, they fail to accomplish this, and the oil deteriorates rapidly. Because turbochargers operate at temperatures of 400°F, much hotter than uaturally aspirated engines, it’s obvious how impor- tant detergents, dispersants and antioxidants are in motor oils formulated for turbochargers. Window film protects THERE’S NOTHING like window film to add that finishing touch to your automobile or recreational vehicle. By acting as a barrier against heat and ultraviolet rays, the film can improve air-conditioning effi- ciency while protecting your up- holstery and increasing privacy. The film can also significantly reduce glare and eyestrain on those long trips into the sunset. Available in soft designer tints, the scratch-resistant film can give your car the look of expensive tinted glass without the high cost. The scratch resistance is especially important for roll-up windows that are in frequent use. In case of an accident, the film helps keep shattered glass in place to protect passengers and property. It also strengthens the glass, making it more difficult for in- truders to break into your car. Possessions are also more secure because they are less visible to the casual passerby.
